Latest Mexico travel warning excludes most tourism destinations
The Mexico travel warning issued by the U.S. State Department on Jan. 9 contained no essential changes or surprises from the last one that was issued on July 15. Still exempt are Cabo San Lucas, La Paz, San Miguel de Allende, Guadalajara, Puerto Vallarta, Mexico City, Riviera Nayarit, Oaxaca, Huatulco, Puerto Escondido, Cancun, Cozumel, Playa del Carmen, Riviera Maya, Tulum, Merida and Chichen Itza. The latest warning said there is escalated cartel violence in the northern border regions and in areas of the Mexican state of Michoacan. Tourists are not targets but are advised to defer travel to those areas and exercise caution if traveling there. "Millions of U.S. citizens safely visit Mexico each year. The Mexican government makes a considerable effort to protect U.S. citizens and other visitors to major tourist attractions, and there is no evidence that Transnational Criminal Organizations [cartels] have targeted U.S. visitors and residents based on their nationality," the advisory said. Resort areas and tourist destinations generally do not see the levels of drug-related violence and crime reported in the border region and in areas along major trafficking routes, according to the warning. The Mexican government has deployed federal police and military personnel throughout the country as part of its efforts to combat the TCOs. The Pacific coast state of Guerrero continues to deal with problems on its northern and southern borders and travelers are warned to stay away from those areas. The warning cautions visitors to remain within the tourist areas in Acapulco, Ixtapa, Taxco and Zihuatanejo. The same holds true for Mazatlan in the state of Sinaloa. As in the previous warning, travelers are advised to stay within the Zona Dorada and the historic town center, but to defer nonessential travel to the rest of the state. Likewise, the State Department said travelers should "exercise caution" in Monterrey and defer nonessential travel to the rest of the state of Nuevo Leon. Cities and areas that U.S. citizens should avoid or be particularly vigilant in include Ciudad Juarez, Tijuana, Ensenada, Chihuahua City, Torreon, Saltillo, Piedras Negras, Ciudad Acuna, towns in the eastern portions of the state of Mexico, the eastern edge of Sonora, Veracruz and Zacatecas.

G20 Summit and U.S. State Department Recognize Safety of Baja California Sur
The safety of Baja California Sur has been recently affirmed by both the G20 Summit and the U.S. State Department. Mexico President Felipe Calderon selected Los Cabos, located in the state of Baja California Sur, as the official host city of the 2012 G20 Summit June 18 and 19. Also highlighting the safety of Baja California Sur is the U.S. State Department's recent 2012 Mexico travel warning that for the first time also includes a "no advisory" in effect for Baja California Sur and the entire South Baja region of Mexico ...more

G20 Summit: Proof that Los Cabos is Safer than Ever
When having world leaders in one location, one of the most important factors is safety. All is Calm Inside the Marina and Fishing Boats Are Out at Sea
Although we have received no official notice from the Mexican Government, several small swells generated from Japan's earthquake have been rolling through the port and marina of Cabo San Lucas. No damage or injuries have been reported. However, we have advised students traveling with us to stay off the beaches for the day and not participate in water based activities.

The Mexican navy says it had detected offshore swells of 2 1/3 feet related to the tsunami, but they have not topped the seawalls along the marinas in Los Cabos. Cabo Spring Break Staff are located inside the Wyndam Resort Hotel which overlooks the Cabo marina. All is calm inside the marina and fishing boats are out at sea.

Cabo Safer Than Dominica, Jamaica and Most US Cities
Cabo San Lucas, often called "Southern Southern California" remains one of Mexico's safest resort destinations. In fact, visiting Cabo is safer than visiting most US cities. Located on the Southern-most tip of the Baja Peninsula, Cabo is over 1,000 miles from the US border, where problems have been reported during the last year. The distance is equivalent to that between Portland, OR and San Diego, CA.

According to NationMaster.com (11/5/10), Mexico remains safer than the United States in total crime per capita, far behind Dominica at #1 (over 10 times the crime rate than Mexico), the United States at #8, and Jamaica at #37. www.nationmaster.com/graph/cri_tot_cri_percap-crime-total-crimes-per-capita

Highest Crime Rate (per capita) by Country
Rank / Countries / Amount
#1 / Dominica: / 113.822 per 1,000 people
#8 / United States: / 80.0645 per 1,000 people
#37 / Jamaica: / 14.3231 per 1,000 people
#39 / Mexico: / 12.8406 per 1,000 people

No Reported Safety Concerns
In Cabo San Lucas

"You have to make a distinction between the border incidents that are going on and the places like Playacar, Cancun, Cabo San Lucas and Puerto Vallarta, which are exceedingly safe."

-NBC News
Reported February 26, 2009

Recently, the media has reported several drug cartel skirmishes occurring along the Mexican border. These problems are happening mainly in the border towns of Tijuana, Chihuahua City and Ciudad Juarez. Due to the increase in cartel activity, the State Department has issued a travel alert for these areas of Mexico. Cabo San Lucas is geographically isolated from these reported problem areas. Located on the southern tip of Baja California, Cabo San Lucas is approximately 1,000 miles from the problem border towns. In addition, all flight packages booked through CaboSpringBreak.com use scheduled commercial airline flights, therefore avoiding ground transportation through these problem areas. Cabo San Lucas is a key tourist location where thousands of people from all over the world travel to every year. As a major spring break destination, Cabo San Lucas is visited by thousands of college students annually. Cabo San Lucas is a safe place to vacation but like any travel destination, travelers should exercise common-sense precautions.

Laguna Beach Spikes Demand For Cabo
As much as everyone would like to deny it, the recent episode of MTV's Laguna Beach based on a spring break trip to Cabo has caused a surge in phone calls and reservations for CSB '07. "We were afraid that many Laguna Beach viewers were in high school, and we don't allow high school students on our trips. However, it actually increased our volume of college reservations each time the show aired," said Chad McConneghy, Director of Sales for CSB. CSB is the only spring break operator allowed to have groups at the Melia San Lucas, the ultra-chic hotel featured on all three Cabo episodes of Laguna Beach.
